What Is the California CARS Act?

A new law to protect California car buyers.

The California Combating Auto Retail Scams Act took effect October 1, 2026. It establishes consumer protections around advertised prices, add-on products, financing, trade-ins and qualifying used-vehicle purchases.

At Hello Mazda of Temecula, we believe buying a car should already be clear. You should understand what you’re paying, what is optional and what you’re agreeing to before you sign.

Don’t Pay for Something That Doesn’t Benefit You

We never charged for nitrogen in our tires.

You’ve probably seen it before — a vehicle is advertised at one price, then hundreds of dollars are added for “nitrogen-filled tires.”

California’s CARS Act restricts dealers from charging for certain add-on products or services when the buyer receives no meaningful benefit.

At Hello Auto Group, we have never charged customers for nitrogen in their tires — and we never will.

A law shouldn’t be the reason a dealership starts treating customers fairly.

Understanding Dealer Add-Ons

Optional Add-Ons vs. Bogus Dealer Add-Ons

Legitimate Optional Products

✓ Extended service contracts
✓ Tire and wheel protection
✓ Key replacement coverage
✓ GAP coverage
✓ Accessories and protection products you choose

Legitimate products can provide value when their benefits, pricing and terms are clearly explained.

Bogus Add-Ons to Watch For

× Products with no meaningful benefit
× Optional products presented as required
× Products added without your agreement
× Unclear or unexplained charges
× Undisclosed mandatory dealer products

Always ask what a product costs, what it covers and whether it is optional.
